Treatment Options

At Balance Sport and Spine, it is our mission to get you out of pain and back to the things you love. Our patients come to us for: Active Release Rehabilitation (see "About ART"), Chiropractic Care, Physiotherapy Rehabilitation, and the overall balance that is restored to their lives in getting out of pain.
Dr. Backus specializes in the examination of osseous (or bony) components, soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilagenous joints), as well as nerve sources to elicit the true pain source in order to treat and alleviate the pain as specifically as possible. This integrative approach allows patients to get better faster, and stay better in the long run. She is additionally certified in Physiotherapy and heavily integrates this into her approach to pain care, as well as Active Release Technique to "prime" muscles for maximum recovery.
- Rehabilitative Physiotherapy
- Chiropractic Care
- Active Release treatment-- The "Gold Standard in Soft Tissue Treatment"

About Physiotherapy
At Balance Sport & Spine, most appointments will have a heavy focus on incorporating physiotherapy exercises, which are essential in patient recovery. We do things differently than most Physiotherapy practices, incorporating individualized one-on-one physiotherapy with your provider--you will not be simply "monitored" along with several other patients simultaneously. Individualized care is essential.
We often see patients for whom traditional PT was ineffective and who are not yet candidates (or elect not to proceed towards) surgery, with wonderful results.
Physiotherapy, when performed correctly, is essential in building structural integrity--maintaining healthy joint position and relieving stress into injured tissues, facilitating recovery. We utilize strengthening and stretching exercises in-office as well as giving at-home exercises to further speed patient progress to normal motion and recovery from pain.

About Chiropractic:
Dr. Backus is a Board-Certified Chiropractic Physician and is licensed by the Virginia Board of Medicine to perform chiropractic medicine. Among the techniques Dr. Backus has received Advanced training in are Chiropractic Sacro-Occipital technique (utilizing CervicoCranial Dural Technique), as well as Activator technique. She specializes in a relatively exclusive approach to chiropractic care in that she uses slow, gentle pressure in correcting misaligned bony structures. Her specialization allows for repositioning of joint misalignments without utilizing fast or sudden motions. In this way, precise results are achieved.

About ART:
Dr. Backus is additionally certified in a highly specialized technique that has been patented, trademarked, and copyrighted due to its specificity of treatment and renowned amazing results--the Active Release Technique (ART).
Considered the "Gold Standard in Soft Tissue Treatment", ART has had success in patients ranging from carpal tunnel syndrome, recurrent knee pain, frozen shoulder, all the way to Olympic Athletes preparing for competition suffering from overuse injuries. This technique--specializing in correcting proper muscle and ligament functioning--can be used to rehabilitate an area post-injury/post surgery, as well as to prevent injury in a poorly functioning muscle prior to an injury occurring (but where pain has become present), preventing the injury altogether. Dr. Backus is a certified ART provider and uses this technique extensively in her work, getting patients out of pain and returning the area to a level of functioning that is "better than it's felt in years!".
